Cynical Mass

Can you give a brief introduction to Cynical Mass?

Drawn together on a toxic island, [Cynical_Mass] is the creative union of several twisted-minded individuals, borrowing influences from various electronic styles, and espousing themes of insanity, violence, self-loathing and death. Intent on creating imagery of a bleak future, while at the same time, hinting at subtle themes of redemption and the faint possibility of hope, [Cynical_Mass] puts forth disturbingly distorted vocals, simultaneously unleashing powerful and catchy synth lines, with harsh and demented drum beats.

Who are the members of Cynical Mass and what did you do before starting Cynical Mass, is it your first band or did you gain experience in other bands before?

The members of Cynical Mass include M.A.Y (Ali), Gearslave (Jeff), and Severhead (Jeremy). Before Cynical Mass was formed,  Ali and Jeremy were involved in film/visual effects and self teaching themselves music software as a hobby and for their soundtracks. A little over a year ago, Jeff came into the picture, and sharing similar interests, a new theme was born. So technically, it is the first "band" considering we are performing as a group now.

How would you describe your music and what makes a Cynical Mass song a Cynical Mass song, what is your trademark so to say?

Our sound could be described as a culmination of distorted insect noises, machinery, war, and dark symphonies. We use heavily distorted vocals to give the lyrics a less human aspect, we consider it more as an instrument than anything else. Without giving away technical secrets, we feel our fans can differentiate a CM track from other industrial bands, not to say we don't follow the roots. We don't sound like a lot of the music that is in the current "scene", which is good and bad. Our trademark (technically) is that pretty logo of ours. >:)

What inspires you in songwriting and how are the songs created, is it a group process or does everybody work on them individually?

We find inspiration in all things, from a shitty day to a bad acid trip (ha ha). Our first album was mostly inspired by events on this toxic waste dump that we live on here in San Francisco, and obviously a lot of negative emotion (if that wasn't already obvious). As far as the creative process is considered, most tracks are started by one member and go through many stages with the other members. Since there are three of us (and we all live in the same home), we have a LOT of content... it's just a matter of picking particular pieces and going further with them.

Cynical Mass

You are a new and young band, does this make things harder or more easy to find your own place in the electro/industrial world?

As a younger band we have the energy to keep moving, while using the current technology to our advantage. We have only scratched the surface of the "scene" and so far have been presented with some awesome opportunities, we look forward to expanding.

Not too long ago you started to play live, with whom have you shared the stages and how did the shows go?

So far we've played with Dawn of Ashes, We Got This Far, WhorMongr, Saints of Ruin, Diabolic Disciple, Unter Null, C/A/T, and Burning Pixels. Like most bands there are always technical problems, but coming from our fans we've managed to impress... we've been trying to raise the bar every show.

How important is the visual part for the live concerts,  Cynical Mass uses blood and make up? What is the reason for doing this?

In our opinion, the nature of live electronic music is such that it requires a visually impressive performance. We feel that the blood and make up add to the aggressive nature of our music.

You just finished the album, Poisonland, what can you tell us about the album, what can people expect and where can they get it?

Right now the album is available on iTunes and SNOCAP for digital purchase. People can expect remastered and remixed versions of the previously released DEMO tracks as well as unreleased material to complete the 12 track compilation. All of the tracks in this version flow into one another and are in a particular order to fulfill the twisted tale on this poison land(fill).

Cynical Mass

During the recordings of the album you came across a lot of problems, what was the biggest problem and how did you solve it?

We lost quite a lot of audio data due to technical complications and computer swapping. We managed to salvage what we could and replace what we couldn't, our biggest problem was the delay it caused us.

What things will you do differently for a next album, or is it too soon to talk about it already?

Cynical Mass will continue to mature in sound, releasing new material as we progress.

What will be next for Cynical Mass?

You will be seeing more media related artwork... Music videos are currently in the works by our own team, we call ourselves "BloodDrunk Studios".
