Interview with Eisbrecher

Can you give a brief introduction to Eisbrecher?

Eisbrecher is a cold fist in the face boring life! We are born bavarian (Lederhosen, Jodeling und König Ludwig Land :) ), we use our mothertongue to be understood in our country by our fellow “Deutschländer”, but still, we want to conquer the world with our music! Big dreams cost the same as small ones ....so here we go! Ah....we exist since 2003, we released 3 Albums so far and a couple of club-singles; we played the biggest dark-gothic-wave-events in Germany such as M’era Luna, Amphi, WGT....we hit the charts on 18 with “Sünde”, we reached the pole position in the DAC (Deutsche Alternative Charts) with “Kann denn Liebe Sünde sein”......we toured successfully with ourselves and wonderful support-acts such as Die So Fluid, A Life Divided,...and...ähm....now we finally get the chance to play in Utrecht at the Summer Darkness, which makes us very very proud. Another country, another language....a graet challenge and at the same time a great honor for a native-language german band like us!

You started with Eisbrecher after you left the popular act Megahertz, how was it do start from the beginning again?

It is never too late to start from the beginning! It is tough, but a human being improves with facing the challenge, the fight, the chance! No matter what will happen.....you will live and learn. Everything is better than stagnation, boredom, frustration and destructive internal conflict! But luckily it is obvious that enough power was left for me to launch Eisbrecher solid and fast....at the right time at the right spot with the right people....it took some tough decisions, it almost wrecked my private life totally...but in the end....Eisbrecher is what we are and what we want to be! 100% true and authentic! You can love us or hate us....but we are alive...and it feels good! My second successful Band invention (Megaherz in 1993, Eisbrecher in 2003)°!

Eisbrecher

Bands who make rock combined with electro influences and german lyrics will often be compared to Rammstein, what do you think of this? Are they of influence?

It is better to be compared to Rammstein than to be compared to Miley Cyrus or Modern Talking...or whatever crap! Normal people need to compare, journalists need to compare.....it is fine with us! No problem. Rammstein is very very successful internationally.....everybody everywhere knows the bad, mean germaniacs from East-Germany. We use similar musical strategies, we are quite some ass-kicking live band (with no fireworks...we can not afford it :) ), my voice is deep and we use electronics and guitars....so far so good. But: We have different topics, i use my voice also for singing and not just for talking and screaming and we tell a totally different story. We are less theatre and more spontanuos! We like what we do and we like Rammstein and we wish them well!

What are the influences for Eisbrecher?

Every good song we ever heared: no matter if chanson, metal, industrial, Kinderlieder, classic rock......hm....what we really like is Faith No More, NIN, Combichrist, Depeche Mode, Sisters Of Mercy, Billy Idol......a lot of stuff. Influences......i don`t know....our biggest influenece is life, people, experience.

Emotions is a keyword in the music of Eisbrecher, how do you manage to keep the emotions in a studio environment and have them on cd? Studios are often very clean places?

Our studio is a very messy place :)! Emotions crawling everywhere...we just have to step on them......to be honest: it is tough.....but we solved this prob quite smart: we do eis-cold studio-albums as good as we can, make it work in the clubs, we do not try to pretend that a 10000 people rock-audience is in the recording room....but then we get on stage and we play the album as rocky as we can get! EB life is quite different to EB studio! You will soon find out :)!

Eisbrecher

Eisbrecher is a big band in germany, also Russia fell for the sound of Eisbrecher. What are the plans for the rest of the world, how will you conquer that?

After we took Russia, Austria, Switzerland.....we will hopefully convince the Netherländers, that we are the band to choose, a band for life, a band just like a good friend. First Europa...than the World.....but with love and slow and easy!

Would you ever consider to do an English album for the rest of the world or do they have to accept that Eisbrecher is a band with german lyrics?

Everything can happen in Eisbrecher-Land! Expect the unexpectet. We already played with english words in “fanatica” and “This Is Deutsch”. And with French and Russian and English in “Polarstern”! We like experiments.....be curious :)!

On your biography you say “with every album our perfectionism gets more fanatic” How do you prevent that you will end like Def Leppard, working for years and years on one album? How do you keep a spontane and open sound?

Luckily we are not Def Leppard (who were soooo big when i was about 18 years old).....; there is not a 9 to 5 schedule for creativity....try to catch a wave and ride it.....if you can not find a good wave....go home, relax....take it easy! Creativity is like a wonderful flower.....you have to open your eyes and your mind to the outside- and the inside- world....and when you feel it, see it...catch it like the infamous fly on the wall.....force it, push it, fight with all your might and ....tatatata...there is the new club hit....it`s a little abracadabra and a lot of crazyness...and hard work..indeed.

You are over 2 meters, our little girl would say you are a giant, what is your favorite mythical figure?

That is Phaeton; the wild young fellow who took Helios’ sun cart and fell from the heavens down to erath after he had lost control about his step-father’s vehicle. He caused quite some trouble (end of the world...) and he died....he is a very human god! That is what i like! The privilege of youth: passion and fury.....and all the danger that comes with it.

What can people expect of the Eisbrecher show at the summer darkness festival?

People can expect a highly motivated band, giving it all and ready to raise hell over Utrecht! Everybody out there coming to the Festival: don`t forget mom`s birtday, be nice to your girls/boys, do not forget the kiss after having sex...no snoring (this goes to the ladies as well :) )....and then sun will be with us! Pray for good weather!
