Hello Kaila, thank you for doing this interview, how are you doing?

Ima bowl full ‘o’ joy right now, thank you. I’ve just had tea and steambuns <- what a name drop, right? I hope you’re doing the same.

You started your own music project K_L4, can you explain the name?

*smile* The name originated a few years back when people tried to pronounce my [real] name. They were adding extra letters and not pronouncing the ones present. It started K-LA, then it progressed to what it is now, I find it appropriate for the music.

What spurred your interest in starting this project, was it a special song or occasion?

I was always into dance/pop/techno since I was young, but back in highschool, I found more industrial and ‘different’ sounds. I liked this. One man in particular [rani sharone] taught me a lot about writing, through the sound of his music and I wanted to compose like him.

Every musician starts with a lot of dreams and ideals, what were yours and have you accomplished them?

Wanting to help other bands and play the main stage myself, a lot has been in the works. Writing music is definitely fun and I’ll continue doing so, though it’s not a full time thing. The biggest accomplishment thus far, was putting out my EP. It had been in the works for a long while and I’m really satisfied that I hear good comments about it for as fast as I completed it.

What was the hardest part for you to get started?

Learning the programs to write my music, which I’m still learning and  it took me years to find my own sound. But now that I have, I’m on a roll for ear domination!

What were and are rolemodels for you, in what way do they inspire you?

There’s no set person or band. My influences switch all the time so it’s hard to extend my finger out and touch just one. Currently I’ve been addicted to Korean pop. But in the long run, I believe certain video games alongside ‘circus’ sounds will always be there.

How did you find your own style, in music and style? What do you want to convey with it?

It took a lot of progression but back from the crappy music I was concocting years ago, till now…nothing but ‘structure’ & ‘pace’ changed. I was taught to incorporate a classic feel [in some songs you’ll hear violins and soft sounds] with a gamer feel mixed in with dance/synth. I’m not sure there is a set style for the music, really. ^_^

How would you describe your own music?

It makes you want to dance, long, hard & fast; glow sticks in hand, miniskirts with light graffiti, barely clothed sweating up a storm, while a giant ass screen is playing your favorite video game.

It’s convivial with hints of mischief.

How do you work on your music and record it? Do you always work the same way?

Spend a few days on basic track, go back, overlay more, repeat until I get fed up, push to the side, come back about a month later [fresh ears work wonders], repeat a few times. If I feel the song deserves lyrics, I’ll write a little something and record that & add effects. This is the same way I’ve worked since I started.

You have just released your first ep called “Empirical” How does it make you feel that you have finished your first ep and to have your music out in the open?

Phenomenal! Exclamation Mark! I’ve been trying to get it released for quite some time. I enjoy when people I’ve not met are listening to it and commenting. It’s a different sound than what people are used to, so I was skeptical at first, but now I don’t care and are enjoying it.

The ep is instrumental, why didn’t you record any vocals, you were experimenting with it as far as we know?

Not sure you would consider them vocals *giggle*, but on ‘Dark Tea Party’ & ‘Kandi Kissed Nightmares’, you’ll hear speaking portions. It was somewhat of an intentional experiment that I’m going to progress on and see what I can come up with. I really just wanted to do something fast to where people can finally get up and dance to. Not much of this style is really out in the open here.

K_L4

Listening to the ep and reading the song titles the name of Tim Burton comes to our mind, does this make sense for you?

I’ve actually been getting that a lot, except with Alice in Wonderland. To be honest, there’s no correlation between any of them. I wrote the songs and sort of threw titles I found appropriate in connection to them.

If you could create your own world, how would it look like?

I live in a fantasy world already. ^_^ Full of blue, coffee and tea.

Describing it though, hmm…I would have to describe it as a little blue kawaii world full of Pokémon type animated creatures. Sort of a happy place. Maybe that’s what I envision while drawing… *glares at sketchpad*

What would be the perfect time to listen to the music of K_L4?

ANYTIME! I’ve been told it’s calming yet lively. It’ll put anyone in a good mood.

What are sources of inspiration for you?

Comics, music, circus, victorian era, poetry, edgar allan poe, art, psychology [anime/movies & it’s study in general], kawaii/anime and creativity.

You are also a designer, what kind of things do you design?

Mmm. <3 I’m an artist and have been long before the music. I’ve many art projects including my recent line of watercolour paintings, which I’ve also turned into computer art and will be taking those further. I’ve designed all the graphics you view on my sites including backgrounds. I’ve also designed the cover art for my EP Empirical and will probably do the same for the actual Cd.

I’d love to start designing my own clothes too, but things take time.

In what way is designing the same as composing a new song and in what way does it deviate?

It’s very much the same in the creative aspect. Sitting down, letting go, and releasing the vision you have from the inside to the outside. I ask myself what I want to portray with each piece, whether it be music or art and just follow through.

In what way do you want your music to progress?

More dance, faster, and more fun! I’ve been studying a few types of music that don’t get as much recognition for what they are, so I’m hoping to include a certain form of that in upcoming music. *wink*

K_L4

How can people purchase the ep?

It’s a bit difficult, but on my facebook, myspace, twitter, my blog, anywhere, personal message or comment me telling me you want one, and we’ll talk about it. I’ve shipped to many countries and would love to ship more out. It’s FREE though.

What will be next for K_L4?

That’s a hard one to pinpoint right now. I can tell ya look forward to more music, more art, and hopefully more creative projects in the near future!

How was it to do your first interview?

Fun, interview virgin NO MORE!
