Can you give a short introduction to Spineflesh?
Spineflesh is a project based in Italy and conceived in summer 2006. Its aim is to combine an aggressive and
synthetic sound with dark atmospheres, taking inspiration from the harsh ebm scene.
What is the musical background of both of you, what did you do before Spineflesh?
Noras and I gave life to antoher project called Edenyzed three years ago. It is different from Spineflesh in style,
since it has a sound closer to electro-metal.
Besides in Spineflesh you both play in Edenyzed, why the urge to start with Spineflesh?
After inculding other two members in Edenyzed (a guitarist and a bassist) who gave even more emphasis to the
metal elements, Noras and I decided to give birth to another project not contaminated by ‘real instruments’ and
showing an attitude nearer to an industrial/ebm scene.

Both of you use nicknames, something that is pretty common in the black metal world. Do you feel connected to
the black metal scene?
I take inspiration from the black metal scene for my vocal style, and musically our songs show a sound sometimes
obscure and ‘decadent’. Anyway the analogies end here. Our attitude is very far from the black metal one, not only for the music but also for the lyrics aspect.
How would you descripe the musical direction of Spineflesh?
Spineflesh’ sound has many ‘catchy’ elements but also aggressive and obscure ones. We simply mix these two
elements trying to give to our sound a charge of vitalism and energy. We try not to appear as a ‘nostalgic’
or ‘depressive’ band, despite the fact that our music shows decadent and obscure sounds: we use those aspects
because we think they are necessary to express in a better way the sense of ‘vitalism’, tragic and full of energy in
the same time.
What bands were/are of influence on the sound of Spineflesh?
We take inspiration from the harsh ebm scene in general, there is no band that ispired us in a particular way. Maybe
that’s because we feel the necessity to personalize our music in the best way we can. Our sound’s base is
industrial /harsh, but we prefer not to emulate a band in particular also because this musical scene is saturated of a
lot of bands. Some people say we are similar to bands as Psyclon Nine or Die Sektor but with something of very
personal. We agree!
You seem to be really busy on the internet, how important is the internet for Spineflesh?
The web for Spineflesh is very important! We started to promote our band only with MySpace when our EP was still
incomplete. We think we’ll use this medium also in the future, since it is very good not only to promote the band but
also to take contact with other bands to organize shows or other kinds of collaboration.
Your ep is out now for a short while, how are the reactions so far?
The reactions are very great! We’re satisfied about the result we made at the moment with our debut EP. We think that
it sounds very good for the lovers of this genre.

How important are the lyrics for you and is there some concept behind them?
Lyrics are very important for us. We believe that it’s necessary to transmit the real emotion of the song making a good
synergy between music and lyrics. The concept behind ‘The Sense of Flesh’ EP shows a materialistic way to see human
nature. In general our lyrics show a direct and explict refusal of every ideal concept and superstition not only about ideal
concepts as religion but also about ideal thought like the notion of ‘perfection’ or ‘innocence’. Borderline New World, for
example, is about a mental pathological condition (Borderline Peronsality Disorder - BPD); I believe this psychic patholgy
is one of the most widespread and those kind of beaviours sometime also come out from people that consider themselves
as ‘normal’. This last word (for example) is another ideal concept I refuse.
Since it was the first ep I guess you learned some things you want to do different in the future. What things will you
change in the writing/recording process?
We’ll always try the evolve our sound, the next songs of ours will probably reflect a definite maturation. But some elements,
like aggressivity and obscurity, will be a constant mark of Spineflesh.
Lately more and more ebm/industrial bands are coming from Italy. Can you tell us a bit more about the italian scene?
We see a lot of industrial or electro-metal/rock bands in our country but not so many are showing an industrial/harsh-ebm
sound. We know some italian ebm bands by name but at present we don’t have any contacts with them.
What are the future plans for Spineflesh?
At the moment we’re planning collaborations with several bands for remixes that will be present in the future re-printings
of ‘The Sense of Flesh’ and we’re organizing ourselves for the writing of new songs for our first full-lenght.
