Hello Vic, thank you for doing this interview with us, how are you doing?

Doing fine :) Impatiently waiting for the moment when everything is ready for releasing a new album! :) How are you?

Probably the hardest question to answer, who is Vic Anselmo?

An extremely emotional, sometimes shy, but sometimes highly explosive creature, that most probably is coming from another planet :).

You are born in Latvia, an pretty unknown country for most of our readers. How was in growing up in Latvia and how did you get in contact with gothic music?

As you may know Latvia is a Post Soviet country. And the Collapse of Soviet Union (that happened during my growing – I was about 5 years old then) was a rather interesting time. It was the time when the world started to be open for Latvian people. That was also the reason for many to be obsessed with material values. After the first advertisement on the TV was shown (It was Snickers chocolate :) ) everybody were running to the shop to buy that stupid thing :) ) Before Soviet Union collapse almost nothing from abroad were available to people, children were searching for some coca-cola cans in the Latvia hotel trash cans (some people from abroad used to stay there), getting a bubble gum was like finding a diamond. I remember how “cool” it was to have a lot of “coming from abroad stuff” at your home, even the labels from bananas were attached to refrigerators door :) )) I remember how once in a week the ice-cream truck was coming to our street – it had only one variant of ice-cream, so called Eskimo- every child from my yard was running like insane to get it:) ).

The music from abroad was in a way the same problem; We didn’t have normal music shops at once - we had a secret “recording studios” at which you had to leave an audio tape, choose from their list what you want on it to be recorded, pay money and then in the next days getting the music you wanted on your audio tape :).

Later on, some shops were open, some musical tv programs were broadcasted, radios were playing new songs that some time ago weren’t allowed to be played. I took attention to all the new music I could, first from the surface coming from massmedia, my family preferences. Later after meeting new people my education continued. That’s how I’ve learned about many bands and styles that eventually influenced my own music:  from blues, soul, country, rock and classic rock (Led Zeppelin; Black Sabbath; Janis Joplin; Pink Floyd,; Emerson, Lake and Palmer; Atomic Rooster;  Sheryl Crow; Tori Amos; Porcupine tree)  to grunge , metal and gothic music (Alice in Chains, Pantera, Devin Townsend, Dead Can Dance.)

My first contact with Gothic music happened through getting to know such names as Type O Negative and Dead Can Dance. But I can’t remember the exact time when it happened.

What triggered you to become a musician?

Music is my biggest passion since childhood, I couldn’t choose any other way as my priority :)

A while ago you released the album “Trapped in a dream” which gained a lot of respect by both press and public. How do you feel about this?

I’m feeling very happy. The first album is a very important thing for the artist, since people get acquainted with your music for the first time and that’s from where the first impression of the listener is formed.

I’d love to thank all the people who support me, it’s well known that the most difficult time is in the beginning - and this support is the greatest present I could ever receive, something that encourages me every time when I feel low and fills me up with hope and strength.

You found your own style which is a mix of different styles, how would you describe it yourself? Where do you see it fitting with contemporary music?

I really don’t like to make labels for music. I very much respect individuality of artists, the free way of expression , being out of borders, being led by free flow of imagination and fantasies. This is the way I feel as well. When I listen to different kind of music I used to take it more on the emotional level and very often I get inspired by the music that differs greatly from my own (for example Strapping Young Lad, Tomahawk, Das Ich)  – but all this inspiration, emotions transforms into something of my own.

But if trying to describe my music and image in a few words – this is a mystical atmospheric journey to the world of dreams. With lots of contrasts and emotions, theatrical elements, sound variety, live instruments and electronic sounds, expressive and melodic vocals, ethereal and fearsome pads and phantasmagorical onstage image.

I’ve never thought about fitting anything, since if I would think about it as priority it would mean I’m doing my job not from the heart.

Your music has both rock elements as electronic elements in it, where does this fusion come from?

“Trapped in a dream” is dedicated to dreams – one of my biggest inspiration . As we know, dreams may differ in a thousand ways. Such a fusion is really necessary to bring the right, sureal, colourful atmosphere of them. To make every dream-song more realistic! Rock and Electronic elements are just some pieces of a big puzzle.

Who are rolemodels for you and what are situations that inspire you in songwriting?

The greatest source of inspiration of mine are dreams. Since childhood I was a big dreamer and was obsessed with all mystical. (Invented all kind of games about the End of the World and travelling to another dimensions, wrote my own horror stories.) And dreams became the place where all my fantasies could come true, the place where it’s possible to run away from reality, system and stereotypes, the place where your imagination can work at full range, having no borders.

As I have already mentioned before I am emotional person, so inspiration for me comes from all around me – books, music, art, computer games, people, places (in childhood I also usually used to invent mysterious stories about them and I still do nowadays sometimes), situations (positive and negative; positive give us happiness, negative ones – experience and ability to value what we have – both things are very inspiring);

But in general songwriting for me is a very spontaneous and personal moment – the melody and lyrics most usually are coming to me very suddenly, it is hard to catch an exact moment and the reason why it happened.

I don’t have any particular role model for songwritting. But I am very inspired in people who create their music freely, without any style borders – like for example Devin Townsend and Mike Patton.

When it comes to creating music, do you always follow the same path, can you give us an insight in the creative process of Vic Anselmo?

As I told previously, the birth of a song is a totally indescribable and magical moment . I play the piano, taking a bath, going to the shop, walking around forest or waking up in the middle of the night and melody comes (sometimes with lyrics at once)!

What aspects of your personal life do you feel need the most musical catharsis?

Personal is personal :). Life itself in any aspect of it, is very inspiring! Full of surprises and interesting moments :)

Music indeed helps to let the inner pressure out, the negative emotions that are gathering inside you and are about to explode if you don’t let them out. But when you are filled with happiness, there’s also a will to express it.  Too many emotions of any kind – positive or negative – create the inner pressure.

You have chosen to put this album into a “dreamform”. Where does this idea come from and was it easier for you work to work with this team?

Concerning the “dream concept”, as I already mentioned is a very close topic for me since childhood, (really many colorful and massive dreams through all these years I’ve seen). So the idea of the album had been always in my head.

The team, the people who’s responsible for producing “Trapped in a dream” are two members of my band – Herman (guitarist, manager, arranger) and George (keyboards). And I am very proud of this fact, in my eyes these people are incredible talented and genius. They have been always such a big inspiration for me - seeing how they work on my songs, how they feel the concept, melody and each word that I’ve put there. In general, I am a rather stubborn and critical person, but to work with such a team is the biggest pleasure for me!  Special thanks to our drummer Martin and bass player Peter, they did a great job too!

How did you build the tracklist for the album because it has quieter and harder moments, were you looking for a certain flow to have on the album?

Life without contrasts would be soooo boring!:)

Your liveshows are impressive and very visual, do you consider yourself more a performer or a creator? Where do the ideas for the live shows come from?

All the ideas came spontaneously, sometimes depending on the concept of the single song; but mostly by brainstorming, improvising and experimenting.

I feel like both – creator and performer. In fact, all the costumes, (except the guitarist’s – he wanted to realize his own idea about the outfit) I made myself with my mom.

How do you prepare for a live show, do you have any strange rituals before going on stage?

Breathing deeply, going into kind of a trance, entering a completely different world and then coming on stage.

Are you already working on a new album, how far are you with it?

Hopefully in a few months it is out. All the material is recorded,  now we need to finish the mix, artwork and find the way to release it!:)
