Collide

Who is kaRIN?

A person who likes to make things and has a lot of compassion and understanding for other human beings.

In what way does this show into your daily life, the compassion and understanding?

I am always kind to people and treat them the way that I would want to be treated. It seems obvious to me.

Why do you write your name this way (with RIN in capitals)?

Basically to help people who just see it in print pronounce it.   Also for some odd reason… I do not like the capital k for it …odd... but true.   I’m not that normal…in a good way though... I think.

Together with Statik you form Collide. How did the first meeting went back in 93 and at what point did the 2 of you decide to start making music together?

Statik and I banged into each other at a club.  At that time, he was very busy working in a studio doing programming for lots of other artists, he also worked on his own music.  We were friends and one day he asked me to come in and sing on one of his songs he was working on.  As I was in the studio…it was like a magical intervention…after that moment…we just kept on making music together.

The music you make together is it based on a special chemistry or musical fristion?

In both bands there is a special chemistry, that is what makes it magical.  At times… there is also friction…it takes all the ingredients to make it what it is.

What music did you listen too when you were younger and has your taste in music changed over the years?

Fortunately for me, my Mom had very cool taste in music…we listened to Pink Floyd (still one of my favourites), Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Leonard Cohen etc.  My taste now is eclectic, I like to hear what’s new…I like the experience of what I have not heard before.

What are main subjects in your lyrics and what inspires you in writing lyrics?

Life…it’s really me talking to myself…I have a lot to say, but I am very particular in how I say it.

Is it hard to translate the things you see and experience into lyrics for songs?

Lyrics in general are very challenging to me because words are important. My personal favourite songs are when I know I have connected with my inner feeling and let them out in a way that I want to hear them… if that makes any sense.

You also run “Saints and Sinners” tell us abit more about it?

One of my other passions is designing and making things. I have just always, always been that kind of person…. my brother calls me the most consistently creative person he has ever known.  It started when I decided to decorate his room with toothpaste blobs and cornflakes on top.  Apparently, I thought his room needed a re-do.  The story goes that my mom just thought it was funny,  she always encouraged me to be creative, or do whatever I wanted to do.  Now I also run my own design company…it’s a small arty thing, we make lots of cool things and I have a several people who work with me.  To see what I am talking about go here www.saintsandsinners.tv  there is a lot going on here really…. sometimes I am overwhelmed by all of it…but also driven still.

What do you think is the most overated virtue?

I am not sure about the most overated virtue…but the underrated ones seem abundant…honour for one.

The secret meeting cd was originally intended to be an ep, when and why did you decide to make it a full length cd?

Because that’s what was supposed to happen and we could all feel that it was special.

At what point did you realise you all were creating something special, did you talk about it together to share this feelings? How did this go?

It was funny really, we were all feeling it but nothing was said until we were all answering an interview together and the topic came up and we all confirmed that we would like it to become a full project.

You are a fan of Curve, how was it for you to work with Dean, was it like a dream come true?

You know not only artistically was it a dream come true…personally too…Dean is just such a sweet, kind, chill human being and a pleasure to deal with.  Every time I have an interaction with him…I like him more.  He is a super talented guy and has lots going on…right now he is working on a project with his daughter called SPC ECO.  I love the sound…talent runs through that blood, I’ll tell you.

In sideline magazine you say that the only guideline Dean gave you was “Have fun” Did you succeed in it and isn’t it hard to have fun in making music all of the time?

Yes, I think I succeeded.  I can listen to the album to know that I was in a very good place at the time.  Sometimes when you are pouring things out from your soul, it’s the painful things that haunt you that like to find release.  To me it’s tough to write a happier song that is not too sugary, or cliché.  I feel like I got there on The Secret Meeting.

Is it nervewrecking for you to release a cd, you put all your passion in it and than have to wait what others think about it?

Sort of…it is even weirder for me to give it to people who know me, as I feel like I pour my heart out and I feel a little hyper sensitive to their re-action.  It feels like you give someone your diary of personal thoughts and they say…ohhhh what’s for lunch.  It can feel like… wow you really don’t hear me.  On the other hand strangers that I do not know connect with it and I go wow…you really do hear me.

What is the funniest comment you got on the “Ultrashiver” cd?

I can’t think of a funny comment on it really.  We have been really touched about the great things that have been said.  I think it’s a special entity.

If you could have “a secret meeting” with anyone, who would it be?

Hmmmmm…good question.  I would meet with the peace makers like Gandhi…and we’d talk about how to make the world a better place.  One of my first dreams that will always be with me was where I met with a wise man, he was old and we were on a boat.  He told me the keys to the universe.  I was so disturbed in the morning when I couldn’t remember all that he said. But now in my life… I feel like I got it…I really see the big picture.  If not that… it would be Salvador Dali and I would get inside his head and we would giggle and drink together.

What are your dreams for the future (personal and musicwise) and how will you try to achieve them?

Dreams for the future are to make more art that I believe in.  Hopes for the future to help guide the world into a better place before it’s too late.

What do you think people can do to make this world a better place for ourselves but also for the next generations?

Where would I begin…if everyone took more responsibility and understood that we live on a small planet and we all have to get along that would be a start.  My feelings are that money and power are very corrupt and make people act with all the wrong motivations.  I think that people should become less complacent and speak up about things…we actually just started a new thread on our forum for this.  I think if people do not talk about all the good and bad in this world and start to look inside themselves for actions… it will be very sad.

Everybody has a special song, sometimes even feels like the artist wrote it for them. What is your special song and why?

I don’t have one special song…I have special phrases…like Kate Bush…”if I only could make a deal with God, I’d get him to swap our places”….Pink Floyd…”We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year running over the same old ground.  Have you found the same old fears….Wish you were here.”   It is definitely the words and the feel that will connect me to a song.

I have the feeling Collide is a band that is close with their fans. How do you manage to keep in contact with them and why are they so important?

I never think of people as being fans…I think they respect music and our music happens to reach out to them and for that I am honoured and thankful.  I never take it for granted.

Any last words for the readers?

kaRIN:  Sending love your way…thanks for reading…thinking...being.
